Birmingham, Alabama
Birmingham was scary. Clearly we were in a place that was unlike anyplace we'd ever been, and we did NOT know the rules, nor were we welcome. Nonetheless, I am so glad we went.
The Birmingham Civil Rights institute was very moving -- oddly inspiring and depressing all at once. I cried so many tears in that place! Some things I learned:
-- Alabama is perhaps the most conservative place in the country
-- Christian spirituality had a huge role in the civil rights movement, as a vehicle for organizing and as a comfort to people
-- Black American voting rights are palpably recent
-- There is so much left to do
